Diving the Tragic Maldives Site: Inside Devana Kandu (Vaavu Atoll) Underwater Footage & Safety Tips

While diving in Italy last week, I heard the heartbreaking news that 5 Italian divers lost their lives at Vaavu Atoll in the Maldives. It hit incredibly close to home because I was at that exact same dive site, Devana Kandu, back in April. There is already a lot of speculation online, and as a regular recreational diver rather than a dive professional, I am not here to lecture or analyze what happened. Instead, I want to share the actual footage I captured at Vaavu Devana Kandu, explain what makes this site so unique, and share some simple, practical tips on what keeps a dive safe based on common recreational diving knowledge.

In this video, we'll cover:
What is a Channel Dive?
Why do currents bring so much marine life, like sharks, manta rays, and tunas?
Underwater landscape analysis: The unique slopes and vertical drop-offs of Devana Kandu.
Comparing it to Miyaru Kandu (the famous Shark Alley) next door.
A breakdown of my liveaboard dive briefing and why evaluating incoming/outgoing currents is vital.
